Background of the Study

Diaspora remittances, the funds sent back home by nationals working abroad, have long been recognized as a vital source of income for many developing countries. These remittances contribute to poverty alleviation, economic stability, and household welfare (Okoye & Bello, 2023). However, in recent years, there has been increasing interest in understanding the role of diaspora remittances in the political landscape, particularly in their influence on campaign financing. In Nigeria, the growing involvement of the diaspora in domestic politics, especially through financial contributions, has raised questions about the impact of such funds on local elections.

Zaria Local Government Area (LGA) in Kaduna State has a sizable population of citizens working abroad, particularly in the Middle East, Europe, and North America. The influx of remittances to households in Zaria has been substantial, with many candidates from the area receiving financial support from their relatives and supporters in the diaspora (Mustapha & Ibrahim, 2024). While the impact of these funds on local electoral campaigns remains underexplored, it is likely that remittances play a role in campaign financing by helping candidates cover costs such as advertising, rallies, and voter mobilization. This study will explore the role of diaspora remittances in funding political campaigns in Zaria, seeking to understand the extent to which these funds shape electoral outcomes.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The influx of diaspora remittances has transformed economic landscapes in many Nigerian communities, including Zaria. However, their potential impact on political processes, particularly campaign financing, remains largely unexplored. While remittances can enhance the financial capacity of local candidates, there are concerns about their implications for electoral integrity, fairness, and transparency. This study aims to assess the influence of diaspora remittances on campaign funding and electoral outcomes in Zaria LGA, examining the ethical, political, and financial implications of diaspora involvement in local elections (Salihu & Musa, 2025).

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the extent to which diaspora remittances contribute to political campaign financing in Zaria LGA.

  2. To examine the role of diaspora funding in influencing electoral outcomes in Zaria LGA.

  3. To assess the ethical implications of using diaspora remittances for campaign financing in Zaria LGA.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. How do diaspora remittances contribute to campaign financing in Zaria LGA?

  2. To what extent do diaspora remittances influence electoral outcomes in Zaria LGA?

  3. What are the ethical implications of using diaspora remittances in political campaigns in Zaria LGA?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

  1. Diaspora remittances significantly contribute to political campaign financing in Zaria LGA.

  2. The influence of diaspora remittances on electoral outcomes in Zaria LGA is positive and significant.

  3. The use of diaspora remittances in campaigns raises ethical concerns regarding transparency and fairness in Zaria LGA.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study will offer insights into the role of diaspora remittances in shaping political processes, especially in terms of campaign financing. By focusing on Zaria LGA, the research will contribute to a deeper understanding of how financial contributions from abroad impact local elections, especially in an era where diaspora engagement in Nigerian politics is growing. The findings will inform policymakers, electoral bodies, and political parties about the challenges and opportunities posed by diaspora financing, helping to shape regulations on campaign funding in Nigeria.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on the impact of diaspora remittances on campaign funding in Zaria LGA, Kaduna State, with particular emphasis on the most recent elections. The research will examine the role of financial contributions from the diaspora in determining the success of political candidates in Zaria.

Limitations include the difficulty of accessing detailed financial data from candidates, as well as the challenge of isolating the specific influence of diaspora remittances on election outcomes, given the numerous other factors that influence voter behavior.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  • Diaspora Remittances: The funds sent by individuals working abroad to their home country, often used to support families or community projects.

  • Campaign Financing: The process of raising and spending money to fund political campaigns, including for advertising, rallies, and voter mobilization.

  • Ethical Implications: The moral considerations and potential conflicts of interest arising from the use of external financial support in the electoral process.
